"On August 8, 2023, my family lost everything to the devastating Lahaina Fire. Our home, our belongings, the place where memories were made — it was all gone in a matter of hours. In the midst of the heartbreak and uncertainty, we were introduced to STRATA, an architectural firm based in Sonoma, California, through a connection of friends. What began as an offer of pro bono help quickly became one of the most meaningful partnerships in our rebuilding journey.
STRATA stepped in with a level of care, compassion, and professionalism that went far beyond what we could have ever expected. They not only helped us design a new home, but also guided us through every technical and bureaucratic step — from finding surveyors, mechanical and structural engineers, to navigating the permitting process. They worked closely with our budget and brought our vision to life with patience, creativity, and respect. They listened to our story, and in return, gave us a design that reflected both who we are and the hope we have for the future.
I want to extend a heartfelt mahalo to Bennett, Brad, and Marty. Each of them brought something unique and invaluable to the table — their dedication, empathy, and expertise made all the difference. STRATA didn’t just help us rebuild a house — they helped us rebuild our lives."
"They have gone above and beyond what I would have even imagined when we said yes to assistance. Designing and drawing our house, applying for the permit for us through the County of Maui and 4LEAF Maui. Making changes to the drawings to fit our lot and budget as needed. Plus checking in with us just to see how things are going...We really can't put into words how much this has meant to us. It has taken an enormous amount of pressure off of me and my family. It's hard to lose your home, deal with the insurance company, the mortgage company, and find housing. On top of that, thinking about what it will take to get back to your lot with a new home that you can actually afford to build. STRATA has really let their actions do the talking for them."
"Shortly after losing our home in the Lahaina fire, a friend offered to connect us to an architecture firm based in Sonoma, CA that was looking to help local families design house plans for free. After speaking with them and learning more about the work that Strata does, we were overjoyed to receive this opportunity. The heads of the company came to Maui to meet us in person as soon as we decided to move forward with our rebuild.
At the time of the fire, we had a four-month-old baby so, on top of all the logistics and emotions to deal with, it took some time for us to gather the mental capacity to really focus on our architectural plans. Like so many others that went through this tragedy, much of our first year after the fire was spent trying to get our affairs in order and then heal, regroup, and find a sense of normalcy. Strata was so patient, generous, and easy to communicate with throughout the entire process.
Thanks to Strata, our house plans are complete and our building permits were recently approved. We plan to break ground this month, shortly before baby number two comes along. The wonderful people at Strata made the design and permitting phase as smooth as possible and we couldn’t be more grateful. We can’t wait to build our house plans into reality and to feel a sense of place again. There’s no doubt in our minds that the Strata team will be first on our guest list for our housewarming party! And they will forever sit in our hearts as a reminder that people helping people helps make the world go round."
"Shortly after the horrific Maui wildfires, a group of friends from Sonoma got busy planning to offer their help. Strata AP owner Bennett, his lifelong friend Marty, and lead designer Brad flew to Maui and offered their services to those who had lost everything.
When strangers are standing in your driveway surrounded by scorched trees and destroyed homes, offering to help, something inside you shifts.
They asked me my hopes, needs and dreams for my new home. They drew up plans, walking me through the entire process. My project manager, Marty, helped me navigate my insurance company, my budget, my contractor, and more. The team was available for questions every step of the way, providing support for all these months.
Rebuilding in a disaster area presents many hurdles and delays. The process can be overwhelming and exhausting. I can’t imagine going through this experience without Bennett, Brad, and Marty. I would have been lost without them.
Strata AP designed me an exceptional home. Seeing the first draft sketch, I was overcome with emotion. The building is now oriented with the coastline and will have sweeping ocean views. Now, my excavation has begun, and we are on our way to construction.
My deepest gratitude to these selfless men, who met us in the ashes, offered us hope, and showed us the true meaning of Aloha."
